Pappou’s Family Restaurant

Parma

MaryLou visited Pappou’s Family Restaurant, ordering Liver & Onions.  There is no gluten free menu.  She commented:

Would definately recommend.  The chef and the server provided numerous options.  Restaurant very clean & bright, seats 100.  Closed on Mondays.  Recommend asking server to check with chef.  Extensive menu.

The Oak Barrel

Valley View

I much enjoyed lunch yesterday at The Oak Barrel.  They have an extensive gluten free menu and the server was very knowledgeable and made several trips to the kitchen confirming french fries were gluten free, but the house made blue corn chips were not made in a dedicated fryer.  They do not have GF bread, so you would have to byob (bring your own bun) for a burger.  I had the Yucatan BBQ Pork taco, sans shell, and the tender well-flavored pork was served platter style with a bowl of tasty slaw.  I did not miss the shell.  I also tried the Chef’s Garden Pickled Vegetables and was treated to a nice selection of pickled radish, carrot and rutabaga slices in addition to the expected cucumber.  There are a number of vegetarian friendly menu items.  The server said the restaurant would soon announce a Sunday brunch menu and promised it would have gluten free options.

I had the pleasure of joining my family for breakfast at the new Bob Evans at Cedar Center (South Euclid) last week.  On arrival, I spoke with a manager who well understood my needs, addressing my concerns about kitchen cross contamination.  While they did not have a gluten free menu, the manager printed allergen information.  I ordered the basics, eggs and bacon, and he personally cooked my food and checked several times to make sure that everything was ok.

4/21/14 NOTE by Diane:  I have eaten here a number of times with great success. Bob Evans now has a gluten free menu.  There are multiple locations in the greater Cleveland area.

9/13/15 NOTE by Diane: There is no GF menu on their website.  I have not been into a restaurant recently so they may have one available at the location.  Here’s a link to their nutritional and allergen information.  Scroll to find the allergen information.  They advise alerting a manager to your needs.

9/18/15 NOTE by Diane:  I had dinner at the Bob Evans in Mayfield Heights.  They had a laminated GF menu.  Despite ordering from the GF menu and being very specific about my order, the meal served obviously contained gluten.  Be careful, as always.

Thanks for this news, Dan:

I ate at the Winking Lizard in Avon on Tuesday night.  They normally have Redbridge Beer and was surprised to hear that they substituted it for a beer called Omission from the Widmer Brothers Brewing Company in Oregon.  I can attest that it is the best tasting “GF” beer I’ve ever had, and had no reaction (I am celiac).

Omission Beer is made with barley, like traditional beer.  But the brewers say they have found a way to remove the gluten and leave the taste. Each batch is tested for the presence of gluten. Have you tried Omission Beer?  What is your favorite gluten free beer?

4/21/14 NOTE by Diane: At this time gluten removed beers are not considered safe for people with celiac disease.  See this report by Tricia Thompson, the Gluten Free Watchdog.
