Next Door American Eatery has opened at Pinecrest.

Their menu has many items labeled GF = Gluten Free Friendly and GFO = Gluten Free Friendly Optional. There is a menu notation: “Please inform you server of any allergies. Our kitchen uses products that contain nuts and gluten”

Our friendly server was familiar with the menu but made several trips to the kitchen to consult with the chef to make sure that my food would be celiac safe. After the 1st consultation he informed me that I should not order anything fried – shared fryers. But a subsequent kitchen meeting brought the news that oil had been changed that day and (only) kale chips and falafel were ok.

We were nearing the end of happy hour, but were able to sneak in an order of falafel from the happy hour menu. I also enjoyed the Next Door Beet Burger on a gluten free bun (extra $1 and worth it). I’d order both again.

The sandwiches and burgers are served with “Chips & Simple Salad”. I was concerned when my meal was presented with the chips but was told by the server who brought it out that the chips were not made in house and were safe to eat. They were standard, but good, kettle chips. I added the salad of lightly dressed greens to my sandwich.

Gluten eating companions liked their Roasted Veggie Salad (though best ordered if you like beets – a lot) and Grilled Chicken sandwich.

The prices are reasonable and there are a number of interesting sounding gluten free items on the menu. But, as always, be sure to ask if those gluten free items are celiac safe.

Our site visitor Brittney shared the news of the opening of Battery Park Pub with us – Thank You Brittney – you are so right – this place is wonderful!

At first I was a bit skeptical, due to the pub name and all.  One visit to Battery Park Pub and I was completely enamored!  So much so that I was seriously considering never sharing the info and keeping it all to myself.

I’m not selfish though, so, here’s the scoop!!

We arrived at the pub, found a seat, and immediately were greeted by Rachel!  She was well informed about all things on the menu and took notes on my suggestions for g-f beer since they had yet to stock that at the bar.  They do have cider and the White Claw Seltzers ( these are super popular ) but  they were out of on that particular evening.

We shared the pickled veg bowl!  One of my favorite things showing up in restaurants these days are the pickled veg.  Battery Park’s bowl was extraordinary – carrots, snap peas, radishes, zucchini!!   Perfectly made and super tasty.

My dining partner had the cauliflower/potato soup and pierogis while I had the mac n cheese with pulled pork topping.  We shared everything!  We loved it all!

After a bit, we were visited by the owner, Garrett, who thanked us for the gf beer recommendations, filled us in on all the details of how they came to be, and checked on our thoughts about the food!  We let him know that we would be back soon, bring friends along, and share all about Battery Park Pub.

Today! in my email!  Garrett messaged to let me know that they are now stocking Glutenberg – Pale Ale!  I’ll be seeing them tonight!

Battery Park Pub is Detroit Shoreway’s neighborhood eatery and drinkery.  Located next to the walking bridge to Edgewater Park, it’s the perfect location to grab a bite and libations before going to the beach.

Hello Bistro

Beachwood. Celiac beware.

Disappointing.

That’s Hello Bistro, a new restaurant concept from Eat’n Park that recently opened up at the Beachwood Mall complex below The Container Store.

It is a fast-casual style restaurant with a salad bar with a build-your-own salad option featuring more than 50 toppings, several proteins, and a variety of different salad dressings. Their Salad Sherpas will build it, chop it, and dress your salad to order.

The menu also lists suggested salad combinations, several of which carry a GF designation.

There are also burgers, sandwiches and soups. Gluten Free rolls are available for 75 cents.

The menu has this disclaimer:

We work fast and furious around here so we can’t guarantee there isn’t some gluten somewhere; but, if you let us know, we will make every effort to prevent cross-contamination. If you have an allergy or another dietary concern, please ask to speak with the manager.

Sounds good on paper and I was excited to give it a try.

Your order is placed with a cashier who informed me that separate mats and utensils would be used. I asked about cross contact from the gluten containing salad ingredients and she called over a manager.

The manager said the ingredients from the general line would be used and no separate ingredients were available.  He said cross contact was likely.  And if I had a severe reaction, I shouldn’t eat there. So I left. Disappointed.

I went down the street to Piada where the manager/chef happily made my salad from ingredients not out on the general line. It was delicious!

Here’s how to find Hello Bistro, if you are brave:
