If you are in San Luis Obispo, California drive very fast to Taste.

This restaurant had small plates and the best ones are the AMAZING variations of gluten-free corn Mac and Cheese. You can have blue cheese, bacon, mushroom, broccoli, caramelized onions, provolone,  roasted red peppers, feta, spinach and a myriad of combinations of these. Oh my goodness it was the richest, creamiest mac and cheese  I have ever had in my life.   Also see my review of San Luis Obispo Donut Company.

OK GF friends book your flight now, you won’t be sorry!!!

I was visiting Texas and went to The Steeping Room for a tea party.
I don’t know about you but, when I have gone for tea since I was diagnosed I have had tea and “the salad” .

At the Steeping room I had the full tea listed on the menu, which included tea sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, tea cookies, fruit, and a tea cake all gluten free and delish!!!!
The only problem I had was my non gluten free friends wanted to share things so they could taste what they hadn’t ordered.
I tried to explain that I couldn’t share because I couldn’t try any of theirs.

When in Austin have fun at tea and check with other tearooms to see if you can have more than “the salad”.

Martha White Muffin Mix

Archived by Diane on 9/13/2023 -> no longer available

Found at Walmart on Warrensville Center Road in South Euclid:

Martha White Chocolate Chocolate Chip Muffin Mix and Martha White Gluten Free Blueberry Muffin Mix.

These 7 ounce pouches, $1.48, were located in the regular baking aisle, and not in the special gluten free section of the store.  Only 50 cents more than their gluten containing counterparts.

They could not be much easier to make: Just Add Milk! proclaims the package.  Indeed, the directions call for 1/2 cup to be combined with the mix, fill muffin cups, bake for 11-12 minutes and cool 2-3 minutes.

The main ingredients are rice flour, then sugar, then respectively semi-sweet chocolate chips or artificial blueberry bits (not a berry to be found). The chocolate mix contains egg, milk and soybean ingredients and the blueberry mix contains egg ingredients.

So, how did they come out?  Remember your mileage may vary as you are driving a different oven and pans.

The “blueberry” muffin batter was the thinner of the two and the muffins were done at the suggested time.  In fact, I probably overcooked them by a minute or so as they were darker than golden brown.  Despite liberally spraying the non-stick muffin cups with non-stick spray, the muffins still stuck with half coming out in pieces.  Next time I’d use paper liners.

The “chocolate” muffins required an extra 2 minutes to be fully cooked and were easier to remove from the pan.

Both had good texture with an expected gluten free crumb.  The chocolate had a few chips and the distinct chocolate flavor.  The “blueberry bits” resembled the real thing in look and taste.

Martha White Muffins Cut

Each mix made 6 medium size muffins.

The packages each have an additional recipe: Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Banana Muffins and Gluten Free Blueberry Peach Crisp.

Gluten-Free Summer Camp Ohio

Gluten-Free Summer Camp

Camp Y-Noah (near Akron)

August 3-9, 2014

Cost  $455.00

Come join in the fun!
At the first year of Gluten Free Camp at Camp Y-Noah!
Registration and info at http://glutenfreeohiosummercamp.weebly.com/

From their website:
“We started this camp because our daughters have attended Gluten Free Camp at Camp Manitou-Lin in Michigan for past few years and they had a wonderful time (Thank You Greta and Nicole). Our only problem was the drive to get them there and the drive to bring them home; 10 hours round trip.

Through the years we had discussed how nice it would be for there to be a camp closer to home. Then we came across Camp Y-Noah.  The head of their food service is a celiac and they already provide gluten free options during regular Y camp and actually serve all gluten free food during their diabetic camp week. They were happy to help us start the first Ohio Gluten free Camp!

The children will be doing normal camp activities.  Some of the options they will have are, a 55 foot alpine tower, climbing a rock wall with zip line, high and low rope courses, canoeing , swimming, horseback riding, team building, camp fires, gaga ball, archery and crafts.  The cabins will be organized by Boy / Girl and age once we know who is attending.

We are planning on having visits from a pediatric gastroenterologist and a gluten free nutrition expert to have age appropriate conversations about why they are gluten free, what to pack for school lunches, what to eat when they are unexpectedly at a friend’s house and reading labels.
