The Oak Barrel

Valley View

I much enjoyed lunch yesterday at The Oak Barrel.  They have an extensive gluten free menu and the server was very knowledgeable and made several trips to the kitchen confirming french fries were gluten free, but the house made blue corn chips were not made in a dedicated fryer.  They do not have GF bread, so you would have to byob (bring your own bun) for a burger.  I had the Yucatan BBQ Pork taco, sans shell, and the tender well-flavored pork was served platter style with a bowl of tasty slaw.  I did not miss the shell.  I also tried the Chef’s Garden Pickled Vegetables and was treated to a nice selection of pickled radish, carrot and rutabaga slices in addition to the expected cucumber.  There are a number of vegetarian friendly menu items.  The server said the restaurant would soon announce a Sunday brunch menu and promised it would have gluten free options.

Garden Lites

Multiple Locations/Locally and Nationally

Thank you Diane for sharing!

Great finds in the frozen food section at Costco today. Garden Lites Zucchini Chocolate Muffins were well priced at $9.99 for 14 individually wrapped GF muffins.  At 120 calories each with 4g of protein and 5g of fiber, I can easily justify one for breakfast or a guilt free snack. I also bought Garden Lites Zucchini Souffles – 7 for $9.69 after $3.25 instant coupon. What do you buy at Costco?  Share your favorites by leaving a reply below.

Marra’s Market

Eastsiders have a new place to find gluten free items.  Marra’s Market is a small store which has a good assortment of gluten free products, including some I have not seen elsewhere.  Prices are as expected for GF foods but the website has printable coupons to help offset the cost.

Located near Wilson Mills at 845 SOM Center Road in Mayfield Village, 440-684-0054.

I wouldn’t make a special trip, but stop by if you are in the neighborhood.  And if you are in the neighborhood, visit the Heinen’s across the street for even more GF merchandise.

Happy shopping!

News from Gay:

“Last night we had dinner at the Press Wine Bar in Tremont. The experienced chef, Rachel, had marked gluten-free items on one of their menus for me and I had numerous options. I selected the Arrtic Char on a pureed sweet potato base…it was perfect. (Artic Char is similar to salmon for anyone who has not tried it.) Currently the restaurant opens at 4 pm but does plan to add lunches soon. To see their menu and location in this near west Cleveland neighborhood, go to www.presswinebar.com. or 216-566-9463.”
